Makoto Shinkai, the director of the film Your Name, who previously held the record, congratulated Tanjiro for the staggering success.
After the end of season one of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, its new move made waves globally that resembled its colossal success. And it’s not just about breaking records; the film has surpassed previous records even in this time of the pandemic.
As Mugen Train becomes the town’s talk, the success is undone without recognizing the last record-holders, especially with the Your Name director, Makoto Shinkai.
The astounding praise
Demon Slayer fans heard Makoto Shinkai after sharing a message about the movie on his Twitter. The director is the creator of Your Name and Weathering With You.
Shinkai has no signs of hard feelings on his message as he divulged his amazement by the success of Demon Slayer’s theatrical debut.
“Wow! How is this possible at Japan’s box office? What A huge accomplishment,” Shinkai said in his tweet. As Shinkai believes what he is talking about, of course, fans were quick to agree with the director.
Previously, the director’s Your Name took down Spirited Away to become the highest-grossing anime film. The man is recorded to have some all-star movies under his belt, and he was well applauded with his impressive work in Your Name.
Is Demon Slayer a threat to Your Name?
To date, Your Name still holds that title as the highest-grossing anime film. However, fans are wondering if the record will be taken away by Demon Slayer.

Demon Slayer, in just three days, brought roughly 43 million USD, which has surpassed the lifetime gross of Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
Weathering With You is the only point of comparison Demon Slayer has at the Japanese box office for now.
Meanwhile, it can be noted that the Shinkai film earned three-times less during its opening weekend that Demon Slayer did the opposite.
The question remains if Mugen Train can keep up with Weathering With You and Your Name in the long run, or if Tanjiro and his friends continue steamrolling forward.
Well, as we can see on the Demon Slayer‘s record up to this date, it will not be hard for the latter to surpass the record.
