Zendaya becomes the first youngest woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Zendaya won an Emmy for her portrayal of Rue Bennett in the hit HBO drama, Euphoria. Her role as a teenage drug addict on the high school drama got the TV Academy’s attention, marking it her first major awards attention after the Golden Globes snub.
During her speech, she thanked her family, her team, and the series’ creator, Sam Levinson.
“I appreciate you so much. You’re my family,” the 24-year-old said. “I’m so grateful for Rue. I’m so grateful that you trusted me with your story.”
The Disney alum said that though it may feel weird to celebrate, she gave the viewers advice that there is “hope.”
“I know that our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that, but there is hope for young people.”
Zendaya beat Jennifer Aniston for The Morning Show, Sandra Oh, for Killing Eve, Olivia Coleman for The Crown and Laura Linney for Ozark.
Not just one history
At the 2020 Emmys, Zendaya didn’t just break one record but broke two.
She is the first young, Black, actor to receive the Emmy Award trophy for the lead actress in a drama since Viola Davis’ win in 2015 for How to Get Away with Murder.
Not just for her performance
Zendaya not only won for the lead actress in a drama award, but she also won the Emmy Awards with her red carpet looks.
In a short clip on her Instagram story, The Greatest Showman star did a little spin in the dress.
Zendaya wore a plunging neckline and silk purple skirt by Christopher John Rogers. She accessorized her looked with Bulgari jewelry and completed her ensemble with Christian Louboutin pumps.
For a mid-show outfit changed, the Spider-Man star was seen wearing another ensemble with her hair arranged in a high bun as she wore a lovely ballgown.
It is said that Giorgio Armani Prive made the custom dress, and her jewelry is from Bulgari.
The awards show’s executive producers told attendees two months ago that the virtual show’s dress code, “come as you are, but make an effort.”
But obviously, Zendaya didn’t plan on wearing just her pajamas during the Emmy ceremony, telling Jimmy Kimmel about it last month.
“I do want to dress up. I still want to have the experience,” she said in an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
